"I just saw a stunning production at Fringe -- waaay above what one expects there -- and urge you to catch it. BUT only today/tonight. Based mainly on Butoh aesthetic, SHINKA is brilliantly conceived and enthrallingly presented. The written description doesn't do it justice ... but no description can capture it. Through superb production elements, SHINKA is the visceral and intellectual made manifest, with emotional and cognitive power and clarity in every detail of story arc, movement, sound, lighting, costume ... yet encompassing a wealth of literary, psychological, sociological, evolutionary references. Even the sound track is carefully calibrated to be just loud enough to envelop you, and allow the bass line to reverberate subtly in your chest, but without blasting eardrums. And capped by an exquisite cameo surprise by production (and company) creator Yoshiko Usami. All in 60 mesmerizing minutes.
