Filmmaking for Butoh Dance

In this two-session course (four hours total), you will learn the basics of how to create a short Butoh Dance film from start to finish. This course will equip you with the tools you need to transform your filmmaking for butoh dance, elevating your work from simply documenting your movement to creating powerful art intended for the screen. In Session 1 (Mon Oct 24, 8:30-10:30 pm EDT), you'll learn how to set up your device for filming, light a scene, and compose your camera shot, as well as camera angles and what they usually mean. In Session 2 (Thurs Oct 27, 8:30-10:30 pm EDT), you'll learn about exporting from your device onto your computer, basic editing software, editing techniques, editing to music, and general project export instructions. You can attend just one session or both! Although assistance is available for all participants, we will work more interactively in class with the materials created by the first 12 participants who register. |
ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:
Jorge Luna is an actor, filmmaker, writer, and producer from San Juan, Puerto Rico. At the age of seven he was inspired by a virtuoso circus performance by a troupe called Círcolo. A few years later Jorge discovered his love for performing art when he started off as a DJ, and continued spinning in night clubs and venues. He particularly loved being smuggled into nightclubs at a young age to spin a vinyl before midnight. He continued djing for several years until he discovered his central passion - acting. Luna can be seen on Netflix's The Week Of with Adam Sandler, Steve Buscemi, Rachel Dratch, and Chris Rock. Plus, Guest Starring roles on The Blacklist, Elementary, Lisey's Story, The Code, and Law & Order: SVU. Some of Luna's favorite theater roles have been Marat in Aleksei Arbuzov's The Promise, Antonio in Jacobo Morales' Baipás, Roland in Nick Payne's Constellations, Laertes in Shakespeare's Hamlet, and Trissotin in Moliere's The Learned Ladies. His roles have been far reaching, ranging from antagonist Iachimo in Shakespeare's Cymbeline to the visionary Vlass in Summerfolk. Other roles have included Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, Cassius in Julius Caesar and Trinculo in The Tempest. In film he has played characters who demand a full emotional engagement. Luna played one of four leads in John Harkrider's feature film, All the Beautiful Things (Sundance), a role he developed with the director. Other films include Angelo (producer, lead actor) and La Sala (co-writer, co-producer, lead actor). More recently, Luna co-wrote, co-produced, and starred in a feature film called planet b234 where he plays a father that struggles with living far away from his son. planet b234 premiered at the Vail Film Festival and has screened all over the United States, including the Atlanta Underground Film Festival and the Lighthouse International Film Festival. It will be premiering in the UK at the prestigious Aesthetica Film Festival. He trained in acting at the University of Puerto Rico, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, and holds a MFA in Acting from Brooklyn College in New York City. JOINT WORKSHOP WITH JORDAN ROSIN
RESONANT BODIES: ONLINE BUTOH PERFORMANCE INTENSIVE
with Jordan Rosin & Yokko Monday – Friday, May 31- June 4, 10am-3pm (PDT), 1pm – 6pm EDT ONLINE via Zoom (4.5 hours each day, 22.5 hours total) FINAL PERFORMANCE: Saturday, June 5, 6pm – 7:30pm PDT/9-10:30pm live via Zoom In this 22.5 hour, week-long intensive participants will engage tools from Butoh Dance and European Physical Theatre traditions to cultivate deeper awareness, imagination, & expressive capacity, while creating an original performance, which will be showcased at an online public showing on June 5. Mornings are dedicated to somatically-informed physical training and conditioning through disciplines such as noguchi gymnastics, mime, yoga, acrobatics, contact improvisation, Lecoq technique, Viewpoints, Laban, and Pure Movement. Afternoons are dedicated to learning Jordan & Yokko’s repertory choreography, and the creation of an original Butoh Dance composition under the guidance of Jordan Rosin & Yokko. |
Pre-requisite: Prior performance experience is recommended, but not required.
EDI SCHOLARSHIPS: In an effort to begin to address the lack of diversity in professional performance training in the USA, Jordan Rosin – Yoga, Butoh, & Physical Theatre is offering two full-tuition “Equity, Diversity, & Inclusion (EDI) Scholarships” to artists of color and members of other underrepresented groups. |
